description:
The new youth and teen area at the Palos Heights Public Library is located on the second level and includes staff workroom and office, the youth and teen collections, a room dedicated to interactive digital technology. a hands-on early learning pretend play area, 3 study rooms, and a new maker space. The floor is organized from youngest to oldest with picture books at the entry and the teen and maker space at the rear of the space. The new custom staff service point is located in the middle between the collections and at the entrance to the early learning area in order for staff to have a clear line of sight to all areas. The new program room includes an AV system for programming, a dedicated storage closet and millwork with a sink, a hard surface floor for easy clean up of messy activities, and an operable wall to opens to the early learning area for expanded space when there are not any programs in sessions.
The overall palette of the space is bright and colorful with warm natural wood tones and custom felt light fixtures that lead the patrons through the space . The teen area builds upon this theme using the natural wood in a series of arched bookshelves, moveable furniture and richer tones for a more sophisticated design aesthetic that was developed with help from the teens.
